"Marketing Shouldn't Be a Dark Art"
An in-depth conversation with Directonaut founder Luka Karsten Breitig about democratizing growth, his journey from psychology to tech, and making marketing accessible to every entrepreneur.
Let's start with your background - you've had quite an unconventional path to founding Directonaut.
I studied psychology and management, but my real education came from building businesses. Started as a freelancer, scaled that into The Happy Beavers - a content agency with over 150 contractors. But what really shaped Directonaut was seeing hundreds of founders struggle with the same problem: they built great products but couldn't find their audience.
You're running Directonaut as an Estonian e-resident. How's that working out?
It's been fantastic. Estonia's digital infrastructure is incredible - everything from company registration to banking can be done remotely. Plus, their startup-friendly policies make it easy to focus on building rather than bureaucracy. I think they're showing the world what a truly digital society can look like.
I noticed something interesting - you studied psychology and worked in marketing, but now you're coding a product. That's quite a leap.
Yeah, I was tired of depending on others to build what I envisioned. So I committed to learning to code - spent countless nights on tutorials, built small projects, and gradually worked my way up. Now I've built Directonaut from scratch, and I'm really proud of what it's become. It's proof that with enough determination, you can learn anything.
Speaking of learning new things - you're currently in Bangkok, right? Is the "digital nomad" lifestyle all it's cracked up to be?
You know, people often romanticize it, but the reality is both better and more challenging than Instagram shows. Being location-independent gives you incredible freedom and perspective - right now I'm in Bangkok, and the energy here is amazing. But it also requires discipline and structure. The key is finding your own rhythm and building a routine that works for you, wherever you are.

What exactly is Directonaut? There are already countless marketing tools out there.
Directonaut is different - it's not just another marketing tool, it's more like having a growth mentor in your pocket. We help founders and indie hackers learn marketing step by step, using AI to simulate customer conversations and market research. Most founders aren't marketers, and traditional marketing education doesn't work for them. They need something practical they can apply immediately.
I heard about your "Pitch to Grandma" feature - what's the story behind that?
That came from personal experience! I was trying to explain one of my business ideas to my grandmother, and it was a disaster. But it taught me something crucial - if you can't explain your idea to someone completely outside your industry, you probably don't understand it well enough yourself. This isn't just about simplifying your pitch; it's about achieving that deep clarity that makes your marketing resonate with anyone. Now it's one of our most popular features.
You're launching a marketing tool - how are you marketing it yourself?
We're starting where our users already are - Reddit and startup directories. These platforms are full of founders actively looking for solutions, and they appreciate direct, honest communication. It's about practicing what we preach - finding your audience where they already hang out instead of trying to drag them to where you are.
How exactly does AI help someone become better at marketing?
Think about learning a language. You can read all the books you want, but you need conversation practice to really learn. Our AI lets founders practice customer conversations, test messaging, and get immediate feedback. It's not about replacing real customer interaction - it's about helping founders prepare for those interactions more effectively.
Your pricing targets bootstrappers and early-stage founders. Why focus on this segment when they typically have the least money to spend?
Because that's exactly when they need the most help. Most marketing tools assume you already know what you're doing. But what if you're a technical founder who's never done marketing before? What if you're an indie hacker building your first product? These are the people who end up wasting months or thousands of dollars on ineffective marketing because they don't know where to start.

But there's free marketing advice everywhere - blogs, YouTube, Twitter. Why should someone pay for Directonaut?
That's exactly the problem - there's too much information. It's overwhelming and often contradictory. We structure the learning process and make it actionable. Instead of generic advice like "find your target audience," we guide you through specific steps and let you practice with AI before you risk real money on ads or outreach.
You mentioned The Happy Beavers earlier. What made you switch from a successful service business to building a product?
I saw the same patterns over and over. Clients would come to us after burning through their budget on ineffective marketing. They'd built amazing products but had no idea how to reach customers. I realized we could help more people by teaching them how to do marketing effectively rather than doing it for them.
What's your response to critics who might say "you can't learn marketing from AI"?
They're missing the point. You don't learn marketing from AI - you learn by doing. The AI is just a tool to make the learning process faster and less risky. It's like having a sparring partner when you're learning boxing. You still need to get in the real ring eventually, but you'll be much better prepared when you do.
How do you measure if Directonaut is actually helping founders?
We track specific outcomes - are founders able to identify where their customers hang out? Can they craft messages that resonate? Are they getting better response rates in their outreach? But the most telling metric is when founders tell us they finally feel confident in their marketing decisions instead of just guessing.
What's your vision for Directonaut's future?
Marketing shouldn't be a dark art that only experts can master. Our goal is to democratize growth knowledge and make effective marketing accessible to every founder, regardless of their background or budget. We want to be the bridge between having a great product and finding the people who need it.
